The Bowen Technique is a gentle but effective approach to pain relief that triggers the body’s natural healing responses. It recognises that the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal, neuromuscular and other health problems can be found in the fascia.

Fascia is an uninterrupted web of soft tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, organs, nerves and blood vessels. It is rich in a range of receptors that influence the body’s neuromuscular physiology in many and complex ways.

After an initial assessment, treatment consists of a series of gentle cross fibre moves over very specific points on the body. These moves aim to disturb the muscles, connective tissue(fascia) and subtle energies within the body, creating balance and stimulating energy flow; also increasing circulation and improving lymphatic drainage. These effects generally result in reduced pain, greater mobility and an improved sense of well being.

During the treatment the client is left resting several times, allowing the body time to respond to the moves that have just been performed. In most clients a state of relaxation is induced.

After treatment it is recommend that the client’s intake of water is increased. It is best not to sit for more than an hour at a time. It is also recommended that there is no other “body work” for 4 days after the treatment as this interferes with the healing response which continues for 4-5 days after treatment. Vigorous exercise for 24 hours after treatment is discouraged.

Being low impact and non-intrusive, ‘Bowen’ can be used safely on anyone, from babies to the elderly, athletes to the immobile, during pregnancy and for general health maintenance.
It can be administered through light clothing, with the client lying down or sitting.
