Back Pain Treatment

Back pain affects up to 80 % of Australians at some point in their lives, often limiting work and leisure activities. Our clinic takes a comprehensive, non‑surgical approach to back pain treatment. We begin with a thorough assessment to diagnose the underlying causes of your discomfort and evaluate movement patterns, muscle imbalances and lifestyle factors. A personalised treatment plan is then developed by our AHPRA‑registered physiotherapists, who are university‑trained to diagnose musculoskeletal conditions, prescribe rehabilitation exercises and refer for imaging or specialist review when necessary.

Physiotherapy is the foundation of our back pain programme. Evidence shows that physiotherapy combines exercise and manual techniques to manage pain, improve mobility and restore function. Unlike surgery or medication, it is non‑invasive and drug‑free. Treatment may include joint mobilisation, soft‑tissue massage, dry needling or acupuncture to relieve tension and restore movement. Specific exercises focuse on strengthening deep core muscles, improving posture, improving movement patterns or biomechanics and enhancing spinal stability. National and international low‑back‑pain guidelines recommend active strategies – such as exercise – as first‑line care, while passive methods (rest, medication) are discouraged. Physiotherapy treatments also includes education on ergonomic setup, lifting technique and self‑management strategies to prevent recurrence.

Our back pain treatment integrates other modalities when appropriate. Remedial massage helps relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and augment physiotherapy gains. Acupuncture or dry needling can reduce trigger‑point activity and pain sensitivity.

Back Pain Conditions We Treat

Back pain has many causes, so our treatment plans are tailored to the specific condition. We commonly help patients with:

Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for:
  • Low back pain (acute or chronic)

  • Back sprain or strain

  • Lumbar radiculopathy / sciatica (nerve root pain)

  • Sacroiliitis (sacroiliac joint inflammation)

  • Degenerative disc disease / arthritis of the spine

  • Spondylolisthesis and spondylolysis

  • Ankylosing spondylitis

  • Kyphosis and Scheuermann’s kyphosis

  • Scoliosis-related back pain

  • Compression fractures due to osteoporosis

  • Myelopathy (spinal cord compression)

Our Back Pain Treatments

Our back pain treatments are multifaceted, focusing on many factors that may be contributing to your pains especially in cases of chronic pains.

  • Physiotherapy: Our AHPRA‑registered physiotherapists diagnose the underlying causes of back pain and deliver hands‑on manual therapy, joint mobilisations and personalised exercise programs to restore mobility and reduce pain.

  • Massage Therapy: Remedial massage helps relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and speed recovery—making it an ideal complement to physiotherapy for back pain.

  • Acupuncture: Using traditional Chinese medicine principles, acupuncture reduces pain and inflammation by stimulating specific points along the body’s energy pathways, supporting healing and long‑term relief.

Why Choose Wilston Physiotherapy & Massage Clinic

  • Experienced practitioners: Our AHPRA‑registered physiotherapists, remedial massage therapists and acupuncturists have extensive training. We stay current with the latest research and continue our professional development.

  • Integrated care: We combine physiotherapy, manual therapy, exercise therapy, massage and acupuncture to address pain from multiple angles. Studies show this integrated approach leads to better pain relief and functional outcomes.

  • Personalised programmes: Every treatment plan is tailored to your needs and goals. We consider your lifestyle, work, sport and underlying health conditions. Home exercise programmes help you continue progress between sessions.

  • Evidence‑based practice: Our therapies are grounded in research. Exercise and manual therapy are first‑line interventions for back pain. Acupuncture and manual therapy combined can further reduce pain and improve function. We use treatments with proven efficacy and monitor your response to adjust accordingly.

Our Treatment Approach

Clinical guidelines for nonspecific low‑back pain recommend a multimodal, biopsychosocial approach that emphasises education, reassurance and physical activity, often combined with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise. Exercise therapy is considered a cornerstone of back‑pain rehabilitation; it includes motor‑control training, mobility‑focused interventions, aerobic conditioning and resistance work. Evidence shows that programmes combining exercise with manual techniques reduce pain, improve mobility and restore function. National and international guidelines discourage prolonged rest or reliance on medication for low‑back pain, urging patients to stay active and engage in supervised exercise.

Our physiotherapists therefore use hands‑on techniques such as joint mobilisation, soft‑tissue massage and dry‑needling alongside tailored exercise programmes. Specific exercises aim to strengthen deep core muscles, improve posture and address faulty movement patterns. We also teach you how to adjust your workstation, lift correctly and pace your activities. Starting physiotherapy early has additional benefits: a large retrospective study of nearly one million adults found that early physical therapy for acute back pain was associated with lower odds of subsequent chiropractor visits, pain‑specialist consultations, emergency‑department visits, advanced imaging and injections, and it reduced 30‑day healthcare spending. In short, early active care not only improves outcomes but may also reduce the need for more costly interventions.

Integrating Massage and Acupuncture

While physiotherapy is the foundation of our back‑pain programme, we often integrate other modalities when appropriate. Remedial massage helps relieve muscle tension, increase circulation and accelerate recovery. Acupuncture and dry needling can modulate pain by reducing trigger‑point activity and altering pain pathways.

Recent research supports a combined approach. A randomized trial compared core‑stabilisation exercise alone, exercise plus manual therapy and exercise plus kinesiotaping. Adding manual therapy to core stabilisation produced a 54.7 % improvement in disability scores after three weeks, compared with 27.1 % for exercise alone. A systematic review and meta‑analysis of 11 randomised controlled trials reported that acupuncture combined with core muscle exercises significantly improved pain scores and functional status compared with core exercises alone. A multicentre trial on lumbar disc herniation found that acupuncture combined with spinal manipulation reduced pain and improved function more than acupuncture or manipulation alone. Another prospective cohort study showed that two sessions of manual therapy plus acupressure reduced pain by 25–40 mm on a 100 mm scale and lowered functional disability, with over 75 % of patients reporting clinically meaningful pain reduction.

These studies highlight the benefits of integrating manual therapy, acupuncture and exercise. Our therapists coordinate care across these modalities to ensure each complements the other. For example, you may have a physiotherapy session to learn exercises that stabilise your spine, followed by remedial massage to release tight muscles, and acupuncture to modulate pain.
